Okotoks Living is a lifestyle magazine I helmed as editor from 2012 to 2014. I provided editorial leadership and direction, and spearheaded the launch of its social media strategy, which resulted in audience growth and engagement. The magazine won second place for “Best Cover” at the Alberta Magazine Publishers Awards for its second issue. Prior to this leading role, I was the assistant editor from 2009 to 2012.
I love telling stories about people. For each issue, I wrote a profile on an interesting person who lived in town, from the 94-year-old cowboy who’d been a chuckwagon driver, a barber and fiddler, to the emerging singer-songwriter whose powerful vocals were helping spread her name across Western Canada, to the determined young swimmer who competed at the London 2012 Paralympic Games, to the fire chief who helped keep the town safe and saved lives.
For each issue, I also assigned stories, did photoshoots, copy edited stories, proofed pages, provided direction to freelancers and the art department.
